Advantage of Recycled & Remanufactured Ink Cartridges

Millions of empty toner and inkjet cartridges used in printers fax machines, and copiers are discarded every year and end up in landfills or incinerators. Buying remanufactured toner and inkjet cartridges, and recycling empty cartridges, is an easy way for businesses to reduce the environmental impact of these discarded products and often save money at the same time.

Using Better Ink Cartridges

any office equipment that uses a replaceable toner or inkjet cartridge can use remanufactured cartridges. Remanufactured toner and inkjet cartridges save resources by reusing components instead of disposing of them after one use. Remanufactured cartridges offer clear advantages over new cartridges in terms of cost and waste reduction. They are suitable for use in many printers, copiers and fax machines. The quality of remanufactured cartridges has improved dramatically since these products were first introduced in the 1990s. High-quality remanufactured cartridges now undergo a process that renders cartridges equivalent in performance, print quality and page yield to new models and that meet all original equipment manufacturer standards and specifications. Furthermore, using remanufactured cartridges will not void manufacturers’ warranties on these products as was once believed.

Recycled Ink Cartridges

Recycling toner and inkjet cartridges is a process of collecting, sorting, cleansing, treating, or reconstituting for the manufacture of new products or the remanufacture of used cartridges. The typical used toner cartridge is composed of primarily plastic, metal and small portions of rubber, paper, foam and toner. The plastic alone takes at least one thousand years to decompose. However, approximately 97 per cent of these combined components can be recycled or reused.

Popular Brands of Remanufactured Ink Cartridges

Leading ink cartridge and toner cartridge manufacturers, such as Hewlett Packard, Lexmark, and Brother have instituted environmental programs. For example, the Hewlett Packard Planet Partners LaserJet supplies program, in operation since 1992, has helped customers recycle over 39 million HP LaserJet cartridges worldwide, which represents approximately 50,000 tons of material diverted from landfills. Lexmark, through its Cartridge Collection Programs, recovers millions of used cartridges to be either reused or recycled. They have various methods of return and sponsor unique collection partnerships around the world. Their program is designed to ensure that empty Lexmark print cartridges are properly recovered, reused or recycled; resulting in less solid waste and fewer resources consumed. And Brother International Corporation currently has a program in place to collect used Drum Units, Toner and Ribbon Cartridges, Ink Cartridges, and P-touch Tape Cassettes. They provide free prepaid shipping labels on their Webster for the return of these consumables.

As environmental awareness grows and consumer’s demand requires greater accountability from manufacturers, toner and cartridge recycling and the purchase of remanufactured cartridges have become common practices in offices throughout the world.

Ten Easy Ways To Go Green

The resources on this Earth are being rapidly consumed by its inhabitants.  We as citizens of this Earth need to be more proactive in doing all we can to be more eco-friendly and responsible when it comes to the consumption of those resources.

Here are a few quick, easy ways you can begin to “go green”–

  1. Buy and use energy-saving light bulb in your home.  Fluorescent bulbs last up to 12 times longer and use 2/3 less energy than regular light bulbs.
  2. Turn off lights in your home when not in use.  Lighting makes up about 11% of your electric bill.
  3. Conserve water by only washing full loads of clothes and dishes.  Take showers instead of bathing in the tub.
  4. Buy locally grown produce from your local farmers market.  This will reduce the cost of fuel used in getting the produce to consumers.
  5. Take your electronics off stand-by.  If you have appliances and other electronics that use stand-by electricity, you can save up to $200 per year.
  6. Recycle plastic, glass, aluminum, paper, old tires, etc.  Purchase products made from recycled materials.
  7. Turn down the heat in your home during the winter.  Lowering the thermostat by one degree can save as much as $100 per year.
  8. Save a tree by paying your bills on-line.  Use e-mail instead of writing letters.  Ask to be removed from mailing lists so you can reduce junk mail.
  9. Buy refills for cleaning products, shampoo and beverages instead of tossing out the old containers.
  10. Help clean up the polluted air by car pooling, walking, riding a bicycle or using public transportation.

Just follow these simple rules and you can make a significant impact on saving the resources of our Earth.

Freshwater Oil Spills

Freshwater bodies are not just the main source of drinking water, they also serve as nesting grounds and food sources for various organisms. Oil spills could pose a serious threat to freshwater ecosystems as the fresh water organisms are exposed to high risk.

Fresh water ecosystem includes two habitats, standing water, and the flowing water. Oil spills affect standing water more severely than flowing water as the currents offer a natural cleaning mechanism.

When an oil spill occurs, not only are the aquatic creatures smothered to death, the aquatic vegetation is also susceptible to deadly effects of oil spills. Oil spilled into the rivers clings to plants and grasses. Animals that feed on these plants are also affected, causing a serious damage to the food chain.

In addition, birds and mammals either get killed or injured soon after they come into contact or will be slowly poisoned by long-term exposure to oil that is trapped in shallow water bodies or stream beds. Thus oil spills have a catastrophic effect on the local ecology.

The Freshwater Spills Information Clearinghouse (FSIC) serves as a point of entry for freshwater oil spill planning and response information. It includes research data and document abstracts, geographic information system data relevant and organizational links.

The effectiveness of Freshwater Spills Information Clearinghouse depends on how much the research community posts historic and current information electronically. But there has been a lack of information specifically related to oil spills on freshwater bodies. This has been highlighted in meetings such as the Freshwater Spills Symposium and also by groups such as the Great Lakes Spill Protection Initiative (GLPSI).

FSIC also posts available environmental, economic, and cultural sensitivity data electronically and will work along with the Great Lakes Information Network’s (GLIN’s) geographic information system (GIS). Organizations that play a major role are also linked. Increased awareness and higher profile for FSIC will bring in more of these groups into the network.

Easy Techniques To Improve Battery Life!

All batteries will fail at some point, when they have been in use for longer periods of time. But premature battery failure is one of the main frustrations people face.

Common thinking is that turning devices off extends battery life, but what happens is the opposite. Devices consume more power when they are starting up, so turning them off is not such a good idea if they are going to be switched on frequently.

Cars and Other Automobiles

It is important to protect the car battery from high under the hood temperatures with the use of a case or a heat shield. The battery life can be extended by keeping the battery charged at all times. Electrolyte levels will have to be checked frequently during the hot months. A recent study revealed that relocating the battery outside the engine compartment has increased its life by almost eight months. Car manufacturers are relocating the starting battery to the passenger compartment or the trunk to avoid under the hood temperatures. It also helps to use wet batteries vented to the outside or cells that do not produce gas when recharged. Based on the driving of each individual, some batteries are undercharged and this leads to sulfation, where lead sulfate gets accumulated, reducing the battery capacity. An external battery can be used for charging.

For any battery, the most important factor to consider is the temperature. Ensuring they are not exposed to too much heat can extend the life of a battery. It is common sense that high temperatures lead to faster chemical reactions. They need to be watered more often with only deionized or demineralized water. However, rain water is a good substitute in an emergency. In addition to the temperature, a reduction in the number of discharge/charge cycles significantly improves battery service life. In extremely cold climates, the car battery needs to be continuously kept fully charged when not in use.

Portable Electronic Devices

Battery life can be increased for iPods, cell phones, laptops etc. by lowering the brightness when not necessary. For example, when using these devices in a dark room, it is not necessary to set the brightness to 100%. The brightness can be lowered enough so that the screen can be seen without exerting any strain on the eyes can be done. The amount of time the backlight stays on can also be decreased. For iPods it doesn’t have to stay on for 10 seconds, 2 seconds should be good enough. Laptops can be set in hibernate mode when not in use.

One most important point that not many people are aware of is that turning down the volume increases battery life. Use headphones that are louder and leave the volume at 50%.

Background applications are power hungry monsters. Stop everything that is not being used. Defragmenting the hard drive once in a while helps decrease file scatter on the hard drive and uses up less power. Send the computer into standby mode after a certain period of inactivity as it conserves battery. Although, standby resume also uses some power but not as much as starting up. Interestingly, leaving a CD or DVD in the drive can decrease battery life, as it hogs power whenever the drive spins up.

In Wi-Fi Applications

Battery life in Wi-Fi apps can be prolonged by either increasing battery capacity or reducing Wi-Fi product power consumption and through control methods. It is easy to increase battery capacity; however, due to technological limits, it may lead to an increase in cost and size of the battery. That brings us to the option of reducing power consumption, which can be done by prolonging the standby time and shortening the time of the active cycle. You can also turn off the WiFi on the iPod when not in use as it consumes a large amount of life.

These techniques of low power consumption can improve battery life dramatically. Most of them are common sense usage techniques and can easily be made part of our daily lives.
